The man who sparked a universe of iconic characters and changed the face of the comics industry has died. Stan Lee was 95, and during his years as a comics innovator at Timely, Atlas and later Marvel Comics brought about the creation of Spider-Man, the X-Men, the Hulk, Thor, the Silver Surfer, the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and so much more.

1976 saw him take a chance on a little fancied sci-fi property called Star Wars, and a million selling first issue later he not only changed the fortunes of Marvel, but set the template for the success of Star Wars.

There simply aren’t words to sum up his contribution to pop culture and the world of comics, so we shall simply thank Stan and say,

EXCELSIOR!
