The release on May 25th 1983 of Return of the Jedi not only brought to a close the original trilogy – an era that was somewhat extended by the subsequent releases of the Ewok movies and seasons of the animated Ewoks and Droids cartoons – but also heralded a torrent of merchandising releases that filled shelves and gave kids of the time plenty of great products to play with.

It was also the first Star Wars movie released during the video age. While The Empire Strikes Back hit the Atari in 1982, and arcades had excited kids around the world during the earlier years of the OT, Jedi was the first to truly compete with the rapidly expanding attraction of video games, so this NBC local news look at kids excited by their Jedi toys is a unique look at an era of movie merchandising that was about to pass into history.
