Fantha Tracks were in the room for the Star Wars Outlaws panel yesterday, a panel which allowed fans a look inside the hotly anticipated game coming our way in 2024 from Massive Entertainment, Ubisoft and Lucasfilm Games.  Joining the always awesome Matt Martin were Massive Entertainment creative director Julian Gerighty and Ubisoft Narrative Director Navid Khavari to discuss the game and its open world goals to immerse fans in the galaxy far, far away.

Though the game is titled Outlaws, Navid feels more partial to the term “Scoundrels” since it was the feel he wanted for the game. He also wanted to showcase the stories of those just trying to survive in the galaxy like Kay, as well as the syndicates fighting to grab a little more profit and power in a galaxy focused on war.

Kay Vess is our guide in this story that is firmly set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Through Kay, the open world aspects of the game come into play. The open world play gives players the opportunity to go anywhere, even though their are certain “lighthouses” of Kay’s story that you will be able to access.

Kay may be struggling to make her way in the galaxy but she is not alone. If you’ve been online you might have noticed pictures of Nyx as well as some of his play features in the trailer. The panelists describe Nyx as Kay’s family. Their relationship is very symbiotic and that is reflected in the game play as Nyx is an extension of what Kay can accomplish. Nyx is voiced by fan favorite voice actor Dee Bradley Baker.

Another character that caused a strong reaction online was ND-5 a droid that Kay goes on a job with. ND-5 is a veteran of the Clone Wars now trying to make his way in the Underworld and he Carry’s that with him. The coat, his posture, even his wound reflect the burdens he carries.

Kay’s ship the Trailblazer is a Republic ship with “lots of secrets” for players to discover, and being a scoundrel of course the ship is not originally hers – she “permanently borrowed” it.

Familiar faces in the underworld world will make appearances in this game as Kay gets involved in various schemes to make a living and possibly get the ultimate score that will set her up forever.

The video offers first looks and information about many areas of the game, including background around how the time period and themes were selected. Julian Gerighty, creative director, also details how Outlaw’s premise influenced the worlds and elements created for the game, “Building the world of Star Wars Outlaws,” he says, “first thing we had to do was think of places that outlaws thrive: these hubs of scum and villainy.”

The feature goes on to describe the creation of Toshara, a new moon, and its main city of Mirogana, to support the outlaw fantasy Massive is bringing to life. It also delves into how the team is drawing from Westerns for the game’s tone, and the syndicates and scoundrel experiences players will encounter. “We’ve only scratched the surface of what Star Wars Outlaws has to offer,” says Lucasfilm’s Steve Blank, director of franchise content and strategy, to close out the feature. “There is so much more that you will get to embody and use and play when you become Kay Vess.”

The Official Site also caught up with Julian Gerighty to discuss the choices Lucasfilm and the games creators have made for the game.

StarWars.com: Star Wars Outlaws is the first open-world Star Wars game. Why do you think that Star Wars fits that genre so well?

Julian Gerighty: On one side, it’s what the team at Massive and our co-development studios that we’re working with are really good at creating. But it’s also, for me, an opportunity to have the player step into the world of Star Wars, step into those locations both new and iconic, and really discover and direct the experience that they want. They’re going to be really driving their adventure with all of the opportunities that an open world means. So you may have some objectives, but you are going to be distracted by your curiosity as a player.

StarWars.com: I always felt like Star Wars was designed with such a sense of history that you want to explore it. And I feel like that lends itself to open world.

Julian Gerighty: We were talking about this the other day, but Episode IV — the cantina in Mos Eisley is going to be recreated in this game. And if I turn my mind back to when I saw it first, you do want to investigate all of those nooks and crannies. You do want to investigate the locations that George Lucas didn’t show on camera, and be the director of your own adventure. So I completely agree with you there.

Social media lit up after the panel, prompting these tweets from StarWars.com and Navid.

We’re as excited as anyone for the arrival of the game (and all the fun of the reveals as we roll up to that release date) so be sure to stay tuned, and fingers crossed we’ll have the chance to talk to some of the creatives involved here on the site, podcasts and socials.
