The Mandalorian coming out November 12, blah blah blah. Hardcore fans already know when the new Star Wars series is coming out on Disney Plus. But Disney still decided to whet our appetites with 5 new character posters. As a poster guy, I always get some minor details about the characters.
Kuiil The Ugnaught
The one character we know nothing about. Is it just gruff ol’ Nick Nolte in Ugnaught form ? We haven’t even heard him speak, so that should be interesting. From the newest trailer, he appears to be a good buddy of The Mandalorian, what with the shoulder touch. Is he a fellow bounty hunter? An independent contractor with different skills? He likes riding Blurggs and is apparently a favorite of the ILM Visual Effects crew. The poster shows he’s armed and likes decorative belt buckles and Doctor Aphra-style goggles. We’ve only ever seen Ugnaughts in Star Wars on Bespin, freezing Han Solo and playing keep-away with Threepio’s head. And there was one in the Lando comic mini-series, playing a disgraced professor of Force studies/dark-side possessed dupe. But what role will Kuiil play in the series?
IG-11
Not to be confused with IG-88, perhaps his brother from a little further down the droid assembly line. With the exception of comics, Robot Chicken and our own backyard adventures, we’ve never seen an IG droid in action. We’ve seen the same action bit in both Mandalorian trailers, IG-11 spinning around, firing its’ weapons at multiple targets. He’s seen with the Mando in multiple shots, apparently his partner in his bounty hunting ways. Some parts of him look a bit rusted and has a double bandolier. We’ve never heard him speak, but he is apparently voiced by Thor Ragnarok director Taika Waititi. Just by that description alone, you know this droid character won’t be like a C3P0 character, more like an L3 or K2SO wise-cracking type.
Greef Carga
Apollo Creed. Action Jackson. Yeah, it’s Carl Weathers, legendary action star. Everything we know about this character is wrapped up in the actor who plays him – he’s presumably a tough guy, a bad ass who manages bounty hunters for a living. Once you blow the poster up on a computer screen, you can actually see a blaster hole in his vest, showing that Greef has seen some action. Oddly enough, he has a single ripped sleeve. He also has a blaster, but not in a holster like most Star Wars characters. No, it’s in his belt, like somebody who normally doesn’t carry a blaster and just picked one up. But he’s Carl Weathers. He knows how to use it.
Cara Dune
Finally. A female character, who, like Rhonda Rousey, you know can thoroughly kick your butt 10 ways from Sunday in real life. Gina Carano, former MMA fighter, plays “former Rebel Shock Trooper” Cara Dune. I found out an Imperial Shock Trooper is an elite Stormtrooper, on the front lines and carried serious weaponry. I can only assume Rebel Shock Troopers do the same thing. I believe Cara Dune has turned into a mercenary/bounty hunter following her time in the winning Rebel Alliance. Besides the title character, this is character I’m looking forward to the most. In the new trailer, she seems to be allies with the Mando. But from the first trailer, it looked like they were fighting. Looking closely at the poster, you can barely see Cara’s rebel tattoo on her face (not sure about that yet, but I’ll guess we’ll find out). And looking at that weapon on her back, that’s a serious gun. Perhaps it’s like Rogue One’s Baze Malbus’ kyber-crystal-powered “machine gun”, putting out some serious firepower. It looks like a tommy-gun with one of those drum magazines. It’s a primary part of her character, given it is front and center, so to speak, on her poster. She’s wearing lots of chipped armor and I see a knife on her side as well.
The Mandalorian
Wow. What can I say about that Mandalorian armor? It looks incredible, a bit worn. Obviously, the character is wearing a helmet so there’s nothing you can get from actor Pedro Pascal’s face from the poster. Just the armor’s details are mind-blowing and you could just look at the poster all day.
Great character design, lived-in armor with stories behind it. I have always been a huge fan of the Mandalorian warriors, from my first Boba Fett action figure to Karen Traviss’ awesome and lamented Republic Commando book series. They just look cool and this guy is no exception.
