Last episode, we ended with the shock reveal that Asajj Ventress was the mystery bounty hunter who had been hired by Aurra Sing and who had quickly become the bane of Clone Force 99’s lives, and in the opening pages of issue 4 we find the Batch hotfooting it away from the ‘maniac with the lightsabers‘ and around to the converting station, where first they try to figure out where a possible escape vehicle will be before the bounty hunter Embo appears, wanting to know what they’re up to. Hunter isn’t impressed, telling Embo he’ll know their plans over his dead body, something the Kyuzo hunter seems happy to oblige. A fight breaks out, one that turns into a furious scuffle, that sees a pipe hit and water gouting out. They spot an escape hatch, which Crosshair fires at, but it’s magnetically sealed, so they duck under the water to evade the bolt. Embo offers to pick the lock, and soon they’re climbing out of the now completely flooded room to catch their breath and make sure Embo is covered.
Hunter makes him an offer. With so many obstacles in their way, he says they should work together, and that way everyone gets their credits and what they need to move forward. telling him he always keeps his word, they shake on it. They step to the edge of the platform, looking down into the water, and while there’s no transport visible, Crosshair spots something in the water and seconds later an enormous red water dragon rises from the depths. Unsure quite what to do, Wrecker is quickly pushed in by Crosshair, and after an uncomfortable few moments he rises from the waters on the back of the dragon, ready to depart.
Moments later the four are riding their own dragons, and Hunter explains that their missions isn’t complete, and they haven’t retrieved the original list. He’s also sure Aurra Sing and Ventress will find them before they them, and as they arrive at the platform where the Havoc Marauder waits for them, he’s proven right as they step forward. Ventress wants them out of the way, and Hunter is determined to get the list, and as Asajj tells them she’s putting Aurra Sing to work, she also reveals that she knew the list was fake and has given Sing the original list, and wants her to go to work and start eliminating them. That’s when Embo’s anooba, Marrok attacks, distracting Ventress until she uses the Force to fling the creature back.
A firefight breaks out, with Aurra Sing firing at the Bad Batch and Embo and Ventress facing each other down. Embo reminds them of the deal they made, and how he doesn’t want to have to chase them down if they fail him. It looks bad for Embo as the red blade pierces towards him, but Hunter deftly shoots the hilt out of her hand, and she turns to face him. Hunter leaps aboard the Marauder, looking down to see Embo and Marrok facing Ventress down as they speed away and soon Tech makes a reveal; a hologram of the first name on the infamous list, and knowing Aurra Sing will be making him her first target, they agree to get to him first.
Another winner, and perfectly setting the scene for the fifth and final issue next month. No one gets the upper hand, everyone is an expert at their craft and all come out of the encounters in one piece, which in some instances can be cringingly contrived but here works perfectly. Fast, pacy and a lot of fun, let’s hope Dark Horse are planning more Bad Batch mini series in the future.
