Star Wars: Tales from the Rancor Pit

Its a dark and stormy night on Tatooine as Jabba the Hutts victim hangs perilously above the rancor pit with only his collection of scary stories to save him.

New York Times bestseller Cavan Scott (Star Wars: The High Republic, Tales from Vaders Castle) teams up with with fan-favorites artists Nick Brokenshire, Juan Samu, Rafael Pérez, and Puste for a trio of terrifying tales just in time for Halloween.

Experience clanking droid ghosts, explore the chilling wampa caves of Hoth and go monster hunting with Saber-For-Hire Ty Yorrick.

All-new all-ages adventures from throughout the galaxy!

Writer: Cavan Scott
Pencillers: Nick Brokenshire, Juan Samu, Andy Duggan, Rafael Pérez
Colorists: Roman Stevens, DJ Chavis
Cover artist: Kelley Jones and Michelle Madsen
Publication date: November 23, 2022

As Jabba the Hutt dangles his latest victim over the Rancor Pit, he is regaled with tales from throughout the timeline in a desperate attempt by said victim at self preservation. This is a seemingly one off short story collection that deserves its place on your shelf.

I’m in love with this book. Sitting at around 80 pages, this feels like a bumper one-shot comic and you will be justified in thinking that at $20 may be a little on the steep side. What it lacks in quantity though it more than makes up for in quality. It’s a veritable chocolate box of macabre delights, beautifully presented and an absolute blast to read.

I’m a huge Cavan Scott fan but the real star here is the art. Each tale is drawn by a different artist and simultaneously flows seamlessly and pops with personality. The artists, that absolutely deserve a namecheck, are Nick Brokenshire, Juan Samu, Andy Duggan and Rafael Pérez. I wasn’t massively familiar with their work but I really hope they continue to play in the Star Wars universe.

The first story “Ghosts of the Machine” shimmers with a gloss and vibrancy you’d expect to find in a coffee table art book. The colours simply pop off the page and the Clone Wars have never looked this good. “Undead or Alive” takes things all the way back to The High Republic with a much needed story for Ty Yorrick. A severely underrated character that we need more of. The art by Andy Duggan is gorgeous and consistent with the art of previous Ty adventure “The Monster of Temple Peak” by Rachael Stott. The final story “In the Lair of the Dragon Sluge” is Hoth story that follows Han, Leia and Chewie as they investigate strange sounds coming from the icy tunnels with Echo Base. Rafael Pérez more than lives up to the legends of the characters and time he is drawing and the story is hilarious and surprisingly adorable (baby Wampas anyone?).

It’s definitely on the shorter side but this is one that you’ll keep coming back to, even if it’s just to marvel at it’s beautiful pages. Mr Scott, who do I have to bombard with emails to get a “Further Tales..“? Dark Horse? If it means I get another boutique collection like this and potentially more Ty freakin’ Yorrick then don’t think I won’t do it. I’ll happily throw my shame to one side if it means more of this.
