Authors: Adam Bray, Cole Horton, Patricia Barr, Daniel Wallace, Ryder Windham, Matt Jones, Anthony Daniels (Foreword)
Publisher: DK Publishing
Publication date: October 4, 2019
Pages: 352
ISBN: 9781465479006

2015 saw the first edition of Ultimate Star Wars, an encyclopedia designed – in the pre-The Force Awakens era – to familiarise casual fans with the in’ and outs of the galaxy, and give deeper-diving fans a chance to quickly grab information as and when they need it. Sequel, prequel, original, animated – if you need it, it’s there, and this new edition, released as part of the Journey To The Rise of Skywalker releases – folds in a hefty amount of new and updated information. Basically, if you own the first one, you need this new one.

DK have been smart, allowing for the releases of Rogue One, The Last Jedi and Solo to arrive, as well as extra content from Star Wars Rebels, Star Wars Resistance (the Customized Changeling on page 335 is my personal favourite addition from that show), and a deeper look at The Force Awakens of course. With all of that vast swathe of extra content, the book has developed and expanded, and while it’s too early in the day to to give away the farm about Rise, this book is an impressive addition to the library.

Opening with a Forward by the longest serving actor in the saga Anthony Daniels, the book is broken down into sub-sections, beginning with a timeline of the saga from the Battle of Naboo through to the Battle of Takodana but not using the current Age of Republic, Rebellion and Resistance delineations). The Characters and Creatures section runs chronologically through the films starting with The Phantom Menace and layering in characters as we go, with the sidebar timeline to add context.

Locations opens with a look at Naboo and then runs through the locations of the saga from Tatooine in Phantom to Crait in The Last Jedi. Technology and Vehicles give us a great look at the fleet of air and ground-based vessels.

Hats off to DK and the designers who have made the book even easier to navigate. It’s easy on the eye, adding relevant and useful into to an already great book, and here’s hoping the third edition will include The Mandalorian, more from The Rise of Skywalker, Fallen Order, Kenobi, Cassian, Resistance season two and much, much more.
