The entire galaxy is already thinking about the 50th anniversary of Star Wars which will finally be with us on 25th May 2027, and ahead of that momentous day we learn that the film that started it all will be coming to IMAX, but which version? Polygon ask the question and chew over the options.
During its latest investor call, IMAX mapped out its rough schedule through the end of 2027 and it includes A New Hope, along with a slew of other titles like Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, both upcoming Avengers movies, and 2026’s Resident Evil from Weapons director Zach Cregger. However, it also still doesn’t clarify which version of A New Hope will be shown.
Back in 2016, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story director Gareth Edwards not only spoke of its existence but also revealed he had seen it. Speaking to the Little White Lies podcast at the time, he said, “It had literally just been finished. [Production supervisor John Knoll] suggested we sit and watch it. Obviously, I was up for that.”
Could this be the version screened at the BFI earlier this year, or a freshly rennovated version as yet unseen? Could it be the Special Edition we’ve lived with for almost 30 years, or something else entirely? We’ll be sure to discuss this on a future episode of Making Tracks.
