While most of the galaxy accept the phonetically pleasing May the 4th as the day to celebrate the saga – and don’t get us wrong, we do as well – the actual day to raise the flag and salute is 25th May, because on this day 49 years ago a little fancied sci-fi film from George Lucas and 20th Century Fox landed on 32 screens across North America (bringing in $254,809 on its opening day), and within days not only made megastars of its young cast, but in quick succession cemented the concept of the summer blockbuster, ignited a new age of visual effects, practically invented the architecture of movie merchandise, entered the zeitgeist in a way few films before or since (and stayed there for 49 years) and with it changed the face of cinema.
Right now, as we enjoy the arrival of the latest Star Wars adventure in The Mandalorian and Grogu we can look ahead to 2027 and the 50th anniversary, but beofre then let’s help the saga celebrate the final year of its fabulous forties before it arrives at one of those really big birthdays.
