Saw Gerrera IS Saw Gerrera in this one-off comic, “The Price,” to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Rogue One. Marc Bernardin writes an essential, authentic, extremist Gerrera, and also provides a key example of the growing division between Saw’s group and the more formalized Rebellion.
There is an intensity and dramatic tension to this issue that makes it such a powerful comic art offering. It is beautiful storytelling for one of the most complex characters in Star Wars canon. Saw’s psyche, forged from the PTSD of the Clone Wars and the loss of his sister, is poured out like liquid poison into an ornate, crystal glass.
The way he sees chaotic and destructive opportunity through anything happening in front of him is a gift and a curse, deserving of mention with Luthen Rael’s “Everything!” monologue from Season 1, Episode 10 of Andor, “One Way Out.” The sacrifices he is willing to make for the cause are on full display. And his willingness to butt heads and ideological differences during a time of war with leadership from the Rebellion, in this case with an irate Bail Organa himself, is powerful.
The examples this story offers from Imperial shipyards and hospitals scream the depths that Gerrera is willing to go—his thought process lurking like the inner monologue of a tortured Edgar Allan Poe character swimming in madness and purpose.
This is a must-read story to better understand a critical character in Star Wars, especially relative to Rogue One and the splintering of the burgeoning Rebellion before it comes together. There is no huffing of rhydonium, the highly volatile and toxic starship fuel we learn Saw is addicted to, but we learn more about what drives him to the escape.
