Kylo Ren’s journey, through Charles Soule’s storytelling, is revisited between the movies Episode VIII: The Last Jedi and Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, as The Fall of Kylo Ren #1: The Fall of Freedom – Part 1: Power launches a new comic mini-series.
After a demanding personal journey, he has returned to the First Order, reasserting his place as the Supreme Leader, and immediately recognizing he must put his stamp on the leadership of his forces.
Ren’s attempts are real, but knowing what we do about the Battle of Exegol, it is easy to see how each decision he makes pulls at the thread that unravels the First Order. This begins with a disastrous attack on Hetzal Prime that he had to salvage with his red-bladed lightsaber in hand-to-hand combat against the Hetzalian forces.
And then the true cracks in the foundation appear in the duo of Admiral Enric Pryde and General Armitage Hux reporting to their leader. Hux accuses Pryde of being treasonous and the source of discord within the First Order. Pryde notes that even junior officers have lost faith in Hux’s strategy and decision making. They are ordered to work together and put the First Order ahead of their own individual aspirations.
But separately, after winning the second battle of Hetzal Prime, Pryde and Ren meet privately. The Supreme Leader exposes his roundabout way to unite the First Order, and demote Hux. Ren praises Pryde’s sabotage of Hux’s plan and was publicly rewarded with the promotion to Allegiant General. Is that the tug of Ren’s cape, caught on the smallest nail that is a betrayed Hux?
At the same time, from the other side of the battle, a small group of Hetzalian refugees are able to escape, but they are on the verge of losing hope. Until the Resistance—who they thought were vanquished on Crait—answers their call. Another pull at the thread of Kylo Ren’s First Order cape that will continue to unravel through this mini-series.
