Bounty Hunters #28

“HAVOC AT THE ACCRETION DISCO, PART TWO”

The bounty hunters took a mission to protect a mid-level Pyke mob boss during a celebration aboard a nightclub that orbits around the edge of a black hole. But when Tasu Leech endures one too many insults from the client, he completes the assassination that the Kanji gangsters had failed to do. Now T’onga and her team will have to fight their way through a space station full of vengeful Pykes to get out alive.

Meanwhile, Valance is being hailed as an Imperial hero for the victories he and his team have achieved against Crimson Dawn. Their string of successes has caught the attention of none other than Darth Vader….

If nothing else, Beilert Valance is a man who will say and do what he thinks, be damned the consequences and the opening pages of #28 of the ever-enjoyable Bounty Hunters shows this off to full effect as not only does he display those exact traits, but he also does it in front of none other than Darth Vader himself. However, before we get to that we’re at the Accretion Disco as the fall out of Tasu Leech ending the head Pyke Omel Sampak explodes in the most blaster-heavy way as T’onga and crew dive for cover, 4-LOM, Zuckuss and Bossk making swift plans to get out of dodge, a plan formulated by the bounty hunting droid. A quick swing to the Mid Rim and the Executor and we find Valance and Jayla Haydenn as they march to meet the dark lord, a meeting that is memorable not only for Valance’s insolence but also for Vader promising to closely monitor the mission Valance and co are sent out to do; stop Crimson Dawn from attacking a shipment of medicine bound for Bestine.

We’re back at the disco and panic ensues as Pyke numbers threaten to outnumber our ‘heroes’, a situation made worse when 4-LOM leaves the scenes but improved when the Gand marksman Zuckuss pulls off a seemingly impossible shot to take down some Pykes. Meanwhile, 4-LOM reaches the engineering chamber and thanks to the unlikely help of an MerenData EV-series (think ev-9d9 from Return of the Jedi) he smashes the console and informs the crew to evacuate, now.

As ever we galaxy hop, and this time it’s across to Corellia and the palace of the Unbroken Clan where we find Vukorah making a decidedly Mandalorian season 2 end credit scene move of taking the throne of the Unbroken Clan using deadly force before taking the seat and thinking of the pain Losha is feeling. Back to the Accretion Disco and we learn 4-LOM has sent the entire station heading for the event horizon, which distracts everyone as they flee for the exits and we’re treated to a stunning splash page of the station crumpling into foil as the Edgehawk struggles to break free of the black hole, which is barely does leaping into hyperspace. We end with an intriguing twist; remember the mission Valance is tasked with overseeing, protecting the meds headed for the world of Bestine (not to be confused with the town on Tatooine). T’onga calls Crimson Dawn to accept the job of intercepting those meds, and we’re all set for another thrilling issue.

Once again Ethan Sacks brings home an enjoyable read, edging the storyline along while making sure there’s plenty of great action for Paolo Villanelli to draw. As ever it’s busy, energetic, full of movement and snappy characterisation while moving the storyline along. Great stuff all round.
