Star Wars #58

The betrayal of Queen Trios of Shu-Torun has left the heroic Rebel Alliance scattered and at the mercy of the evil Galactic Empire!

Unable to make contact with their allies, Leia Organa, Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and the droids R2-D2 and C-3P0 have become stranded on the moon of Hubin.

With no way off-world or ability to contact the greater galaxy thanks to Hubin’s isolationist philosophy, the rebels are forced to rely on the hospitality of the mysterious Thane Markona.  And Markona appears to be hiding a great deal, including his warrior ways…

Picking up in the middle of the action of the previous issue, we learn Thane Markona enjoys combat and utilizes it for a judging character.  He scrutinizes Luke’s abilities while he is embroiled in a fight with the Thanrax.

Meanwhile, Han and Leia engage in flirtatious banter in the comfort of a local tavern.   Until it is interrupted by the chaos of Luke and Markano’s efforts to subdue the battling Thanrax.  For the remainder of the issue we are fed more pieces of the Markano puzzle.  At the conclusion of the issue Luke’s frustration with being marooned on Hubin comes to a head and he takes what may have been a brash decision. Plus we find out just what Leia has been doing in her room all time.

We’re provided with more detail about the history of behind the Markano clan, however, a lot remains behind clouds. There is some Jedi-related or at least Force-sensitive lineage in the Markano bloodline. Markano revealed their self-imposed exile followed a service at the time of the transformation from Republic to Empire.  Was Thane Markano an instrument in carrying out the execution of “Order 66”?  That is my prediction:  some terrible secret the Markano have buried and have been in repent ever since.

“The Escape” certainly places the characters in an uncommon situation.  It’s probably just me but As I follow the story I have a faint impression it is a reflection of an early Marvel years arc. Certainly, all the questions will be answered in the next few issues. I have a feeling it’s not going to an end on a good note for the Rebels or the tranquility found on Hubin’s moon.
