Star Wars: Battle of Jakku – Insurgency Rising #1

Following the Battle of Endor and the destruction of the second Death Star, the galaxy is in a time of uncertainty.

While the Rebels forge a path toward peace, there are still those who would bring chaos and destruction.

The war continues on in….

The Battle of Jakku maxi-series from Marvel Comics launches strongly as a new villain, nurtured through the Imperial ranks, is in denial about the loss of Emperor Palpatine, Darth Vader, and the second Death Star. It remains to be seen if Grand Moff Ubrik Adelhard impacts the events of the Aftermath Trilogy of novels by Chuck Wendig, but the villain is a deep-cut character from 2015 who learned Imperial tactics directly from Thrawn, Tarkin, and Darth Vader.

We meet Adelhard and his leadership team, Lieutenant Alaytia, and Commander Bragh—armored in a suit that appears part Purge Trooper and part He-Man action figure bulk, as they discover a Rebel pilot has escaped their space battle onslaught. As the story of this ruthless group is shared, their stories intersect with two other groups simultaneously.

The first are the heroes of Return of the Jedi. We visit the ending of the Ewok village celebration on Endor with Leia Organa, Luke Skywalker, Chewbacca, and Han Solo. Han and Chewie are readying to leave and help other systems overcome Imperial remnants. Leia visits the burning pyre of her father, the former Darth Vader. She expresses anger and Luke feels it, leading to his offer to train Leia in the ways of the Force—until they are interrupted. A B-Wing pilot by the name of Rynn Zenat has miraculously escaped the Anoat sector and Adlehard’s merciless tactics. She provides the first warning to the Skywalker family and the leaders of the Rebellion that Adelhard and his very real threat must be dealt with.

The other tie we’re introduced to is The Acolytes of the Beyond, led by Yupe Tashu. The cleric leader says, “We must smother the still-nascent Republic,” and informs Reyna Oskure that Adelhard is a major part of their plans. Oskure claims to be and Anzati, a species with a storied history within Legends, but not so much in Canon to this point. She is also exactly who Adelhard demands to meet with next, as his quest for power and control continues.

The Grand Moff started as a stormtrooper and rose to the point where Vader commended and promoted him for gassing an entire planet to kill a small set of insurgents. Now, knowing the Emperor is dead, he exists in his world of alternative facts to maintain his level of success and his desired reality of a still thriving Empire.

“A lie is only a lie when discovered. Before then – for as long as you can stoke the flame of deception – a lie is your truth.” This is not a surprising quote from Adelhard, someone in a position of power who is desperate to remain there, by any means necessary. But his threat is real and will cause death and destruction as this story kicks off and now makes its way to the Battle of Jakku.
