The first issue of Dark Horse’s new young reader ongoing Star Wars comic, Hyperspace Stories, is here and is a promising start to a new era of Star Wars publishing with an old friend.
For those unfamiliar with the history of Star Wars publishing, please allow me to briefly recap; In 1991 Dark Horse published their first Star Wars comic series with the legendary Dark Empire to great success. They went on to release a multitude of comics and collections over the next 23 years until it was announced in 2014 that with the Disney acquisition that publishing would move from Dark Horse to Marvel, with IDW eventually taking over the junior releases. So here we are eight years later; IDW are out and Dark Horse are back in, with Marvel still going strong with adult releases.

So what is
Hyperspace Stories exactly? You may have noticed Padmè, Anakin and Obi-Wan on the cover and be led to believe this is a Clone Wars-era comic and that’s true for this issue but not necessarily true for subsequent stories. Taking over from IDW’s
Adventures series, each issue will tell a different tale from all eras of the
Star Wars canon. As previously mentioned, this issue focuses on Anakin, Padmè and Obi-Wan In the early days of the Clone Wars as Padmè embarks on a diplomatic mission to the Moon of Staggec accompanied by Woolie Senator Yarua and his young daughter Viiveenn. It wouldn’t be
Star Wars if there wasn’t some dastardly plot full of droids and danger. Enter our two favourite dashing young Master and Apprentice of the Clone Wars to swashbuckle their way to victory and rescue. All of the familiar players are characterised well by writer Amanda Deibert, even if they are somewhat simplified caricatures, but that’s to be expected given the target audience.
Don’t be put off by the fact it’s aimed at younger readers. It’s still very much Star Wars and the story moves at a brisk pace with real, tangible stakes. There’s a couple of genuinely emotional moments that will resonate with any reader with a beating heart. The action flows nicely due to the unique pencil work of artist Lucas Marangon. Clear and colourful panels also make this issue incredibly accessible for new readers and veterans alike, young and old.
Looking at the cover for the next issue fills me with hope as it looks to be a Luke and Leia story by a completely different writer and artist, so I’m excited to have a dynamic new ongoing series alongside the more rigid and serious current Marvel runs.
