We’re all familiar with the less-than-pleasant aspects of the Star Wars universe. After all, there’s a lot of dark side present in those worlds! However, that doesn’t mean that all of the universe is evil; far from it. We can think of the Star Wars movies as the equivalent of the news — they only show us the bad side. The Star Wars characters that don’t go into battle are living just like we do, so it should come as no surprise that a range of entertainment forms are present in the franchise. In this article, we’ll run through just some of the ones we’ve spotted — the next time you’re looking for something to do, why not try one of the following?
Sporting Events
In the universe of Star Wars, no one ever seems to be sitting still for more than a few moments. So it makes sense that sports would feature heavily across the galaxy — if you’re not going into battle, then you need to direct that energy somewhere, after all. Some of these sports, such as swoop racing and pod racing, are outright dangerous, at least by human standards. Wegsphere is the sport that most resembles a real world game, and it plays a bit like basketball. The next time you want to live like a denizen of a galaxy far, far away – on a day off, get yourself down to an NBA game.
Playing Games
Games are as popular on the outer rim as they are on earth. You’ll have seen background characters playing games in the bars of the Star Wars movies, and there’s also a big gambling scene, too — Lando Calrissian was a prolific gambler; he won more than he lost, but he did lose a prized possession when he lost a bet to Han Solo and had to give up the keys to the Millennium Falcon. You can walk in the footsteps of Calrissian and other characters by playing at an online casino, or you can grab your friends and play a game of chess — the game they play in the Star Wars universe appears to be the same that we play here on earth, albeit with holograms.
TV, Internet, and Radio
We can’t say for sure how much time the various citizens of the galaxy spend watching TV, browsing “online” or listening to the radio, but we know they exist — there are TVs in the corners of the bars. They don’t have “the internet,” but they do have a holonet, which appears to be a high-tech equivalent.
Live Music
Music is a core part of the Star Wars universe, from John Williams’ rousing scores, to the crazy in-world tunes you’ll here across the various worlds. For instance, there’s the classic cantina jazz band, and we also see live performances in Jabba the Hutt’s palace and in the castle of Maz Kanata. These bands aren’t exactly groups that you’d rush out to see live, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy the same experience. Find your local jazz café, and head on down. You’re likely to see fewer odd-looking characters than you would at the cantina, but we count that as a good thing. If you want the full Star Wars experience, then go see a live orchestra playing the soundtrack — it’s hugely popular, so if you live anywhere near a big city, you probably won’t have to wait too long for it to roll into town.
Conclusion
Star Wars characters: they’re just like us! OK, maybe not just like us, but they sure seem to like having fun as much as we do. Though it’s the big battles — and the drama that surrounds those battles — that typically draw our attention, it can be fun to remember that the average joe in the Star Wars character would engage in similar activities as we do here in our own universe.
