The Star Wars timeline now consists of 6 distinct eras

For a franchise that’s now over forty years old, a lot of content has flowed through the power generator of the saga. While in days past we may have jumped a century ahead with Star Wars Legacy and eons back in Dawn of the Jedi, those no longer define the breadth and depth of the Star Wars story. The eras of Star Wars were recently classified as the Age of Empire, Age of Rebellion and Age of Resistance, with the freshly announced mega blast of new projects coming our way, those are no longer sufficient to explain the history of the saga, and so Lucasfilm have switched it up and redefined the timeline once again into six distinct eras.

Set two centuries before the events of The Phantom Menace, The High Republic era shows the Republic at its glorious peak as the galaxy prospers without war or the threat of the Sith. Keen to include all corners of the cosmos, the Chancellor of the Republic endeavours to carve a brave new future for the galaxy, but as always in the Star Wars galaxy it’s never quite that easy. In time, The Acolyte will sit in this era.

The prequel era consisting of The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, The Clone Wars, and Revenge of the Sith. The Jedi take their eye off the ball as the Sith return thanks to Palpatine’s masterful long-gestating plan to turn the Republic against the Jedi while tempting the Chosen One to the dark side.

The start of the Dark Times, the era of the Jedi Purge and the construction of the galaxy-spanning Galactic Empire as Palpatine tightens his grip on the stars and his apprentice Darth Vader carries out his will. Here we find Solo: A Star Wars Story and forthcoming animated series The Bad Batch.

The era that started it all, the scope of the Original Trilogy has now expanded to include Star Wars Rebels and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story prefacing A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi. The rising surge of rebellion coalesces into a legitimate threat as back-to-back victories at Scarif and Yavin give the galaxy a glimmer of hope.

Following the defeat of Palpatine at Endor and the Empire at Jakku, the New Republic strives to regain lost ground and reignite an era of peace, but instead a tired and worn-down galaxy descends into chaos as remnants of the former Empire carve their own territories. This is the era of The Mandalorian, a time period soon to be occupied by Rangers of the New Republic, Ahsoka and The Book of Boba Fett.

The era of Star Wars Resistance, The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker. The Force ignites in the offspring of a rebellious generation, pitting the Empire’s successor The First Order against the Resistance and the granddaughter of a resurgent Emperor Palpatine.
