Star Wars was sold to Walt Disney in 2012 for more than $4 billion! The reason for this jaw-dropping figure is the fans. Star Wars walks the line between nostalgia and futuristic fantasy that keeps old fans coming back, and new fans wanting more.
And, like any dedicated fandom, Star Wars fans love pitting their favorite Jedi against each other and guessing who would win. Keeping in line with that tradition, asked ourselves who would win: Mace Windu or Obi-Wan?
We’ve analyzed all the factors in this hypothetical duel, so read on to learn who is the ultimate Jedi master!
Use of the Force
One clear advantage that Obi-Wan has is total mastery of the force. More than any other member of the Jedi Order, he has completely aligned his life and training to follow the Force.
In fact, his oneness with the force is so complete that when he dies he leaves no body, instead being absorbed into the Force.
This isn’t to say that Mace Windu isn’t powerful when it comes to the force. He’s on par with Darth Maul and is more powerful than Qui-Gon Jinn. But, Obi-Wan is still the stronger Force user which makes him a powerful combatant.
Lightsaber Skills
Obi-Wan Kenobi uses a lightsaber technique called Suresu, which is characterized by its technical and defensive moves. With Suresu, there is only one style that can counter it: Form 7, specifically Juyo.
Juyo is exactly what Mace Windu specializes in. In fact, he’s so good that he’s created his own modification, Vaapad. Vaapad is an aggressive and offensive style with quick, sudden movements.
Vaapad exploits the weaknesses of Suresu, which would make it an interesting duel, although it can be theorized that Obi-Wan would still have a slight swordsmanship advantage because his Suresu is just that good. This can be proven by the fact that Mace Windu and General Grievous have gone back and forth defeating each other in duels, but Obi-Wan has beaten him every time.
General Grievous uses Form 7 and is faster and perhaps slightly more skilled than Mace Windu, but is still no match for Obi-Wan. This suggests that Mace Windu would still fall to Obi-Wan.
However, the Powers of the Jedi Sourcebook says that Mace Windu is second only to Yoda as a duelist. The book does not discuss how Obi-Wan ranks compared to Windu, but at best it’s a draw when it comes to their skills.
Skills aside, it’s certainly a draw when it comes to their lightsabers. There’s no contesting the fact that the Obi-Wan lightsaber is iconic and graceful. But the Mace Windu lightsaber is also well designed, and both work well for their particular styles.
So Who Wins?
With all these factors put together, it seems that Obi-Wan Kenobi would win the duel. But, it would probably be very close and a very exciting duel between two Jedi Masters.
Mace Windu would use his probing, erratic style to try to find Obi-Wan’s weak points, while Obi-Wan would defend and counter, proving that he has no weakness.
It looks like it would be a win for Obi-Wan, but it wouldn’t be as decisive as he might like!
Mace Windu vs. Obi-Wan Decided
The Star Wars lightsaber duels are some of the best parts of the series, and it’s no wonder fans are constantly imagining their favorite Jedi masters fighting each other! When it comes to Mace Windu and Obi-Wan, we think the victor would be Obi-Wan. What do you think?
