Sad news reaches us as Art Director Alan Tomkins, best known for his work on The Empire Strikes Back, Batman Begins and Saving Private Ryan, has passed away aged 81.

Born in Fulham in 1939, Tomkins worked on Bond movies, projects with Steven Spielberg, 2001 with Stanley Kubrick and a slew of 90’s hits including Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Memphis Belle, Wing Commander with Mark Hamill and Natural Born Killers.

He won a Primetime Emmy in 1996 for Gulliver’s Travels, but we will always remember him best for his stellar work on Empire, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award.

We were fortunate enough to meet Alan at Visit Hoth in 2018 and listened to his fascinating talk on his career, as well as spend some time with him, chatting about that storied career. Our condolences go to his family, friends and many colleagues.
