Speaking with CNN presenter Kristie Lu Stout, future Star Wars director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy teased her forthcoming big screen project starring Daisy Ridley and hopefully (and we can never assume until we’re sat in the cinema with a bucket of popcorn on our lap) arriving in 2026.

“I’m very thrilled about the project because I feel what we’re about to create is something very special. And we’re in 2024 now, and it’s about time that we had a woman come forward to shape a story in a galaxy far, far away.”

While a May 2026 release would be very welcome, turning the film around in under three years while juggling the other big screen projects Lucasfilm have on their slate (Dave Filoni and his Mandoverse film, the Shawn Levy film, the James Mangold Dawn of the Jedi project to name a few) would be a hefty undertaking. With 2027 being the 50th anniversary of the original film – and right now only three years away – perhaps that would be a more realistic target.
