John Wick director Chad Stahelski on a future Star Wars film: “It’s like Rocky. I gotta know”

For a man known for taking swings – and punches, fight scenes, action and adventure – in his John Wick series, it’s an intriguing thought that director Chad Stahelski is interested in bringing his flair and style to a Star Wars project, and speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with host Josh Horowitz, Stahelski made it very clear that not only is he a ‘Star Wars guy‘, but he’d be interested in pitching some ideas.

“I’m a Star Wars guy. The first Star Wars changed my life path. Maybe someday out there, Disney if you’re listening, hit me in a couple of years. I have a couple of takes for Star Wars. I’d take a swing at that, see if Disney could survive me.

I’ve been asked a lot about, ‘Why do you do John Wicks? Don’t you want to try something else?’ Yes of course I do, but given the choice I’ve had and the parameters that were presented to me, as far as those opportunities went, I felt like I could do more and bring something more, and do more of what I want, and do the fights and the anime and the action more my way by doing [John Wick].” Why work within somebody else’s parameters of what I feel to be a duel or mythology when I can create.

It is a big ego dump when you’re like, ‘Alright, do I think I can take them? I still have a little bit of a competitor mindset left in me. I’m going ‘no that’s cool and I’m very flattered and I’m very honoured’, but at the same time I want to take a swing. It’s like Rocky. I gotta know.”

Of course, to pitch Stahelski as purely an action director is to undersell what he has created with the John Wick mythology and everything within it, but could he be the round peg for the round hole Lucasfilm are looking for? Let us know what you think on our social media feeds, and stay tuned for the return of Making Tracks next weekend where we’ll discuss this and all the latest news.
