You may be wondering what the relevance of this post is to Star Wars fans and readers. Well, the relevance is Iain Lowson, long time contributor to a slew of official Star Wars publications including the award-winning Build The Millennium Falcon, and also a writer/director who’s latest project is Don’t, which launched its Indiegogo campaign this morning.
Funding runs for 60 days and aims to raise the £7170.00 needed to bring this fascinating project to life.
A short film that explores control and freedom…
“The Hum is a name often given to widespread reports of a persistent and invasive low-frequency humming, rumbling, or droning noise not audible to all people.”
– Wikipedia
Monotone. Dull. Normal. Evelyn’s existence is all of these things and nothing more.
That is until she becomes aware of a humming noise. It starts to dominate her otherwise normal life. Driven to distraction, she hunts frantically for the source. When she finds an ominous metal box from which the hum emanates, her decision to ignore the simple warning sign – ‘Don’t’ – will have a lasting effect on her life, exposing the comfortably sinister, frighteningly normal forces that control our lives.
Welcome to this, the campaign page for DON’T: a short film project the story for which has been kicking around in my head for more years than I’m willing to count. Stories can be weird, tricksy things that defy being nailed down. They can build you up with their potential, only to turn your brain to mush as they refuse to reveal the way the story should be told. Short story? Mmmm, not quite right. Comic? Nah – too long for a short one, too short for a long one. Weird indie video game? Much as I love ‘em, oh heck no.
The final form came after I started adapting it into an adventure for a certain Time Lord (not an official adventure, I hasten to add). It suddenly struck me that it was all in my head as something filmed, not written and read. D’oh! So obvious.
And here we are. DON’T, the short film.
I am stupidly excited to be announcing over the coming weeks the cast and crew we’ve put together for this project. The chance to bring you along on the adventure is a gloriously intimidating thing, but it is going to be so much fun. And work. But fun work. You’ll see what I mean. And not just on this particular film, not just on DON’T. We’ve got others planned, Stewart and I, and we’re looking forward to letting the backers of this one in on those too. Onward!
Be well, be safe, be excited!
Head to Indiegogo, check out the full details and pledge your support for what is set to be a thought-provoking film.
