In a week where there has been legitamtely shocking movie news regarding a follow on story to The Rise of Skywalker, rumours – and it can’t be overstated, these are rumours – that no less a luminary than David Fincher also pitched a post-The Rise of Skywalker era story to Disney, another that didn’t pan out. No word on which character the project would have focused on, but given it was Fincher who was involved, someone who came from the ranks of ILM back on Return of the Jedi and who’s name has been regularly connected to possible involvement over the years, there will understandably be plenty of interest in this rumour.

A new report from The InSneider says that in addition to Soderbergh, none other than David Fincher “had conversations with Lucasfilm about directing a movie after Episode IX,” though Sneider “promised not to reveal the details of his pitch or which Episode IX character it would’ve followed.” io9 reached out to Lucasfilm for comment or clarification but had not heard back as of publication. We’ll update this story if, or when, we do.

“Fincher was still interested in Star Wars after Episode IX,” Sneider’s report continues. “And had an interesting idea for a follow-up, but at the end of the day, for all the concessions Fincher was willing to make ahead of production—namely with regard to budget—he ultimately wanted final cut, which Lucasfilm simply could not offer him, making the whole negotiation moot.”

As the Gizmodo piece says, nothing has been confirmed or denied by Lucasfilm, and if they do address the rumour we’ll be sure to post about it here. We’ll be saying this a lot this week, but we really want to know what you think about this and other recent news, so email us on news@fanthatracks.com or drop your thoughts onto our socials.
