It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Diahann Carroll who died yesterday aged 84, she was known for her pioneering show in 1960s, Julia, the first US sitcom to centre on a black woman.

She was also first black woman to win the Tony for best actress, in 1962, for Broadway musical No Strings.  She was also nominated for an Oscar for best actress in 1975 for Claudine. Diahann Carroll was also reported to be the model for one of the first black Barbie dolls.

For Star War fans though Ms Carroll has a special place in our hearts as she was known for her iconic role amongst the stars in The Holiday Special performing the song This Minute.
