Film Score Monthly is 35 years old, and the team behind this hugely-respected outlet have launched a Kickstarter to bring to readers a new website, message board, book, CD collection and more. The Kickstarter is already well on its way, now over 60% towards its goal, so pledge and help get this across the line so the world of movie scores can continue to be celebrated and investigated, from modern scores right back to the earliest cinematic soundtracks.

35 years ago, screenwriter, producer, blogger, sci-fi fan and film music aficionado, Lukas Kendall, created a fanzine that became a beloved magazine and destination subscription website (FSMOnline), and eventually a CD label. Dedicated to the art of film and television scoring, Film Score Monthly has covered it all. Kendall has many stories to tell of his encounters with such musical greats as John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Danny Elfman, Hans Zimmer, John Barry, Elmer Bernstein and many more in FSM’s archive. Film Score Monthly has become the recognized and respected source on all things movie music.

Now, celebrating its 35th anniversary, Kendall is launching a new Kickstarter campaign June 10th to fund the following benefits for movie music fans:

1. A brand-new website with a newly tagged and searchable archive of FSM’s 35 years’ worth of content. Kendall and his team are creating the next evolution of FSM’s web presence: a website where you can spend hours going from Williams to Horner, Star Trek to superheroes, Euro soundtracks to cartoon composers, with a few easy clicks.
2. The next generation of FSM’s popular message board, with modern social-media functions and nudges, improving the long-running subscription site, FSM ONLINE, including podcast and YouTube content.
3. In addition, Kendall and his team are offering some unique, newly produced perks:
a) BEST OF FILM SCORE MONTHLY BOOK – a specially curated collection of their
most memorable articles, with new introductions from the editors.
b) A special CD production, THE FILMATION MUSIC OF RAY ELLIS, will be taking
FSM’s RETROGRADE RECORDS brand out of mothballs for a new CD release of
vintage animation music.
c) Creating a new print run of FSM’s fun “FSM COLLECTOR CARDS,” which Kendall first did for fun to promote his CD releases.
d) And to top it all off, Kendall is reaching out to his friends at the CD boutique
labels to get FSM backers discount codes and special offers!

Kendall, who grew up on Martha’s Vineyard, recalls the isolaFon having “Geek” interests like movies, comics, Star Trek and soundtrack albums long before they became popular in the larger culture. “I loved movie music, but before the Internet there was lidle informaFon about it. So, I started a fanzine that became a magazine, Film Score Monthly, and eventually a CD label.

“Film scores are actually cool now,” he adds. “I’ve been shocked how many sFll know me from FSM—not only fans and collectors, but composers and filmmakers. Basically, if you collected soundtracks at any time over the past three and a half decades, you probably know of FILM SCORE MONTHLY.”

In addition to FSM, Kendall has also been pursuing a career as a filmmaker with a variety of projects including his short film Sky Fighter which was released by the DUST sci-fi channel (on Facebook, YouTube, Roku, etc.). The film has garnered over two million views across DUST’s different platorms. Kendall is currently looking for more film projects to work on and pitching some of his other film ideas.
