Writing over at StarWars.com, Amy Richau and Brandon Wainerdi dive into the bricks and pull out a perfectly constructed selection of articles looking at the current series, the 20 year history of LEGO animated adventures (unbelievably Revenge of the Brick arrived way back in 2005) and the many easter eggs littered throughout Pieces of the Past. First, writers Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit look at the bigger swings they took in the second season of Rebuild The Galaxy.
Being open to ideas from the cast and crew was important to Samit and co-writer and fellow executive producer Dan Hernandez. “I think one of the beautiful things about having continuity when you’ve worked together before is that then people do feel more comfortable and that extends not just to the actors but to the production, the animation team, Chris Buckley our director, everyone,” says Hernandez, who has a long-standing partnership with Samit. “We want to elevate everyone else’s ideas. They have spent years perfecting their craft. If they have an instinct, we should follow it; 99% of the time, something amazing comes out of it.”
“There were times where Tony would do an amazing take, and we thought ‘All right, we got it,” says Samit, “and Tony would say, ‘No, I’m gonna go again. I know what I need to do.’ And he would do one more take, and it would be even better. Everyone was on the same page about wanting this to be as good as it could possibly be.”
Next, that 20 year animated history that stretches back to 2005.
The first LEGO Star Wars animated adventure dates back to 2005 when LEGO Star Wars: Revenge of the Brick debuted on Cartoon Network. The short featured Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and Yoda taking on the Separatist droid army on the ground and in space over Kashyyyk, in LEGO brick form. Dozens of shorts have followed including Bombad Bounty (2012) with Jar Jar Binks, Rebels Ghost Story (2014) with the crew from Star Wars Rebels, a series of era-spanning shorts in LEGO Star Wars: All-Stars (2018), and New Year’s Hothin’ Eve (2021) that gave fans a unique new look at the Battle of Hoth. More recently, Gifting with Grogu (2022) starred — you guessed it — everyone’s favorite green foundling.
Finally a look at the easter eggs, and a particularly large Porg.
Jump to flightspeed! We can’t stop thinking about those porgils traveling through hyperspace from the official trailer. In a charming twist, their character design is based on the recent (nearly life-size) porg LEGO set. We can’t wait to see LEGO fans physically create the model mismatch.
