It’s a long-standing tradition that reaches right back to the 70’s when Steven Spielberg congratulated George Lucas and Star Wars for surpassing Jaws as the most successful movie in motion picture history. That tradition has continued across the years, right up to the modern day when other box office records such as the opening weekend that passed from The Force Awakens to Avengers: Endgame are marked by images like this.

To give a sense of the history of this magnanimous gesture, here’s a gallery of selected images showing these images from down the years.

Endgame is smashing all of the records laid in front of it, with $1,477,449,795 in the bank after just 6 days of release, making it the 8th highest grossing film of all time and over halfway to the number one grossing film ever, Avatar. Expect more of these images to be flying around the internet before the end of the month.
