While guesting on the Young Indy Chronicles podcast, Young Indy and Prequel trilogy producer Rick McCallum steered away from the Dials, Arks and Temples of Indiana Jones to the galaxy far, far away and the unproduced Star Wars Underworld project that looked set to light up the galaxy alongside the animated The Clone Wars series back in 2009 but instead became a fascinating and mostly unseen chapter of Star Wars lore. $40m per episode across 100 episodes, released on HBO with ILM visual effects and music by John Williams….just imagine what we could have got had history been different.
“These were dark. They were sexy, they were violent, they were just absolutely wonderful. Wonderful, complicated … challenging. I mean, it would have blown up the whole Star Wars universe … And Disney definitely would’ve never offered to buy Star Wars from George. It’s one of the great disappointments of our life.”
We’ll be sure to chew over this on the next episode of Making Tracks, but until then have a read of our 2007 interview with Rick where he discussed what was then the future of digital cinema.
