Star Wars: What I’m looking forward to in 2019

Another year, more Star Wars. Seriously, there are some people out there who think that 2019 will be the biggest year in Star Wars ever. I do too, but for my own, weirder reasons.

The Mandalorian

Let’s face it. Mandalorians are freakin’ cool. Look at them. There’s a reason why Boba Fett is so huge despite him doing nothing in the original trilogy. Even his action figure is cool. He was the only one in my collection who stood a chance against Hoth outfit Han Solo. Ever read Karen Traviss’ Republic Commando series? Incredible.

Rumors are about that we’ll see the first look at The Mandalorian in April, then the actual show will show up on Disney Streaming near the end of the year. It’s got The Kingsmen and Equalizer 2 actor Pedro Pascal as the dude under the helmet, along with Carl “Apollo Creed” Weathers, Gina Carano, and many other cool actors. Even Taika Waititi as one of the directors and you can’t go wrong. It’s supposed to be real Wild West type stuff. I want official pictures, merchandise, cast interviews, all that. Morally ambiguous characters, scoundrels, technology, and just another look at a Galaxy Far, Far Away….every week.

Episode IX

AKA the next Star Wars movie, the last in the Skywalker saga, the last Princess/General Leia movie! I have so many questions. What’s the name? Did Phasma survive? Where are Poe, Finn and Rey right now? Who are the Knights of Ren? Who are Rey’s parents? Were they really nobodies or is this just a Kylo-Ren-From-A-Certain-Point-Of-View-Type thing?

Also, when’s the trailer? During the Super Bowl? Not until April? If waiting for the Avengers: Endgame trailer taught us anything, it’s the average fan can’t tell when Disney will release a new trailer!

Episode IX Books

I used to work in a major bookstore and there is nothing like opening up a book of NEW Star Wars Visual Dictionaries the night before they’re due to go on sale. Just looking through the images and reading bits and pieces of what’s going to happen. Not too much though, that’s how spoilers are spoiled (that’s how I knew Anakin would lose his hand in Attack of the Clones). You buy the books the day of the movie release, lock them in your car trunk or closet, and wait until you see the movie, then look at the Visual Dictionary and Art of… Books for days on end.

Don’t forget about the magazines that come out too! It’s great seeing a People or Entertainment Weekly Special Edition with Star Wars on the front cover, and knowing you’re not going to be spoiled, just whetting your whistle for more Star Wars!

Comics

I’m more of a Trade Paperback fan only because I like having my comics all together in one compact book. That being said, TPB Watchers like myself have a lot to look forward to. More Doctor Aphra, the ongoing Star Wars saga, a new Darth Vader series, Han Solo Imperial Cadet, and all the spin-offs from the new Episode IX movie!

I would love to see another Captain Phasma series, The Mandalorian, maybe finding out what Luke was doing for years, even more one-shots ala Age of Republic, etc., more Infinities, the list could literally go on forever!

Celebration Chicago

I would love to go to Celebration. That many Star Wars geeks under one roof? This year is in Chicago from April 11-16th. It would cost about $85.00 to get it. Hell, I even got the trip planned out in my mind (14 hours to drive, sleep in the car, snacks, etc.) If you haven’t seen it, the new poster is awesome!

I want to meet the Star Wars Show people, Warwick Davis, and the many ingenious cosplayers out there! I would love to drive a little Mouse droid remote control thingee in a race! Have my picture taken with Roxy the Rancor! Yes, the list does drone on…

Last year Celebration Orlando debuted The Last Jedi trailer—what cool stuff is planned for this year? Super cool merchandise, celebrity panels and artists alley, that’s what!

What do you think? What are you looking forward to in 2019?

Michael Davis
Michael F. Davis became obsessed with Star Wars after repeated viewings of The Empire Strikes Back on VHS and a 1983 viewing of Return of the Jedi in movie theaters. He also saw all the Special Editions in the theater, bought all the Shadows of the Empire tie-ins, and even took a bus trip to Maine to see The Phantom Menace. He is currently employed as a Librarian in the US but has always has his sights on a galaxy far, far, away….
