Tony Gilroy on future Star Wars projects: “The hope is that you can do anything”

Well, here’s a thought. Tony Gilroy, the man behind Andor, arguably the most serious, deep, substantial Star Wars project in its 48 year history, is all behind the saga changing lanes to attempting a three-camera sitcom, citing the tonal differences between Andor and Skeleton Crew as a reason to do very different things in the realms of the GFFA.

“I think we’ve made our lane with Andor, and Skeleton Crew was trying to do their own, too. The hope is that you can do anything, and we’re going to open up some canonical things and concepts in Andor that maybe will get people excited to do other things.

I always fantasised that the show would break new ground, that someone would be able to make a three-camera sitcom in Star Wars or a horror movie. I think the first thing I said to Kathy when she said they wanted to open a line, was, ‘Could you do a courtroom drama?’ And why not? We’ve worked really hard on Andor to make our lane, and it’s up to other people now to find another way to do it.”

Is he right? Is there any good reason why – if it was done well – that a comedy, or a fast-paced West Wing style show in the halls of Coruscant couldn’t work? Let us know what you think and we’ll dig into it on the next episode of Making Tracks.
