What do you get if you bring together host Dan Lanigan, four super collectors in Gus Lopez (The Bobacabana), Steve Sansweet (Rancho Obi-Wan), Duncan Jenkins (The Sithsonian), and Vic Wertz (The Imperial Archives), four incredible collectibles, place them all on a most impressive custom-made set and give them a mission, to chose one – and only one – piece? You get the debut episode of The Saga Vault, an eleven episode series from Cinema Relics in association with Rancho Obi-Wan that week-by-week shall sit down four collectors with their chosen items, and by the end of the show have given viewers enough information to make an informed choice and vote for their own Chosen One.
The concept is sound (a GFFA Room 101 if you will), but the charms of the show lie in its host Dan, who steers the episode with a sure hand, and the instantly disarming ribbing between him and the weeks guests. It would be very easy to be straight-faced about all of this. After all, there are some incredible (and expensive) items on display in this first Mandalorian-focused episode, and with all four very familiar faces in the global Star Wars community it runs the risk of going a bit too far into the weeds, but thankfully that’s not the case. It’s witty, engaging, eminently watchable and leaves you not only wanting for more, but giving you the chance to get involved yourselves by clicking on the onscreen QR code and having your say.
The trailer points to there being new guests each week, with different collectible focuses, so for the next 10 weeks (how refreshing to have a weekly Star Wars focused show that doesn’t dump multiple episodes on the same day) we can look forward to new episodes of The Saga Vault, and learning more about The Saga Museum project. Protecting, curating and protecting the past of the saga couldn’t be more important as we approach the 50th anniversary, and endeavours like this that shine a spotlight on the saga’s history are to be cherished, so hats off to all involved for producing such a high-quality and watchable show.
