While it’s somewhat difficult to review a poster collection, a release with the focus firmly set on visual impact rather than the written word, arriving the week that one of the saga’s artistic masters Greg Hildebrandt passed adds an entirely new element to our look at this sizeable (27.4 x 0.7 x 37.1 cm) release. Packed with 28 posters from across the entire spectrum of the Star Wars experience, it might not include that classic Hildrebrandt Brothers poster (A New Hope is represented by the stunning art of the late British artist Tom Chantrell and the Style A poster by Tom Jung) but it does give us plenty of eye-popping artwork to enjoy.
The first selection of posters run in release order, taking us from the original in ’77 right through to the latest release, The Acolyte. After that it’s another dip into the classics with teaser posters by Drew Struzan for The Force Awakens and the teasers for Rogue One and The Last Jedi handed out at Star Wars Celebrations in here, all able to be pulled out and framed with the reverse of the posters being printed in grayscale, giving an alternate option for display.
All of that makes for a handy release for collectors of posters and those who are either limited by wallspace or budget, and retailing for £14.99 it’s perfectly timed for the upcoming Christmas rush (no Star Wars fan is going to turn their nose up at receiving this as a gift). One suggestion though; an index at the back of the book detailing the artists on show would have been a welcome and dare I say it respectful nod of the hat to the artists whose work has deligted fans for many years. There may be reasons why this wasn’t done, but perhaps future editions (and with Skeleton Crew, Andor Season 2, Ahsoka Season 2, The Mandalorian & Grogu, New Jedi Order and Dawn of the Jedi incoming a second volume surely won’t be too far away).
Smartly presented, this is a a very welcome release from Bonnier Books and their Studio Press imprint, who we thank for the review copy.
