Life’s never easy in the Star Wars galaxy, whether you’re a seasoned bounty hunter like Dengar or Valance or a General of the Unbroken Clan, believing yourself to be secure in a Corellian safehouse until it’s discovered that the deadly Nightstick has infiltrated the room. Elimiating her aid for his failure, General Vukorah of the Unbroken Clan then faces Deathstick who hands her an invitation to a meeting organised by Crimson Dawn that will bring all major underworld concerns together. Vuklorah might not be the leader of the clan, but her actions have clearly come to the attention of the Dawn.
Meanwhile far to the east in Hutt Space on Nar Shadaa, Valance and Dengar head to a commuter shuttle bound for the Corporate sector and Canto Bight. It’s a two-day journey, and as they depart Dengar explains why he is taking on the tricky bounty of Boba Fett – to raise the credits to free his love Manaroo from the clutches of Jabba the Hutt. Valance agrees to help as we quickly shift locations to Nat Kanji and T’onga and Losha as they seek out more help for their continuing mission, and it’s a familiar face from The Force Awakens – Tasu Leech. They watch as he bests an enormous Zabrak in combat, and admire his resolve as he accepts their offer to join them and insists they head off immediately.
Back to Valance and Dengar, now on Canto Bight as the bandaged hunter reminds Valance that they need to keep a low profile and not gamble, as he has a debt of his own to settle with the deadly Sixth Kin. They have a face-to-face with the Sixth Kin leader, who knows Dengar doesn’t have the credits to settle his debt, but agrees to Valance’s plan to head to the Crimson Dawn underworld gathering and cause trouble.
We skip across the galaxy once again, back with Losha, Leech and T’onga as they arrive on the Gand floating sanctuary to find Zuckuss, injured after his last run-in with Boba Fett and in no mood for games. He is hesitant to commit, but they force the issue and the Gand joins their cause and we zip back to Canto Bight as Dengar finds his ship the Punishing One only to be attacked by Deathstick who appears out of nowhere and knocks the bounty hunter down. Valance engages, trying to move Dengar out of his way as Deathstick uses him as cover, and takes a face full of thermal detonator as it explodes. She goes on the offensive, knocking Valance over a bridge, forcing him to shoot his grappling hook and swing into a Canto Bight casino as Dengar takes a beating. It looks like they’ve lost the upper hand, but Dengar was smart, taking the beating to nab a data card from her with the location of the Crimson Dawn meeting.
This is among the most fast-paced issues yet, pinging around the galaxy like a laser bolt in a trash compactor, and as always the artwork is vivid and engaging while writer Ethan Sacks keeps the action moving and the story developing. We’re not only continuing the War of the Bounty Hunters storyline but the ongoing thread of the Bounty Hunters title, and it does so efficiently. Great work all around from Sacks and team.
