Star Wars #63

Queen Trios of Shu-Torun’s betrayal allowed the Galactic Empire to launch a surprise attack against the Rebel Alliance’s fleet and nearly crushed their heroic cause once and for all.

But the Rebels have endured. Princess Leia Organa has hatched a plan to strike back against Trios and recruited a team of rogues and specialists to get the job done.

Now, Leia, together with Luke Skywalker and Han Solo, Tunga, a shape-shifting Clawdite and actor, Meorti, a crack slicer, and even Benthic and his extremist Partisans, is ready to take down Shu-Torun…

Writer: Kieron Gillen
Artist: Angel Unzueta
Colorist: GURU-eFX
Letterer: VC’s Clayton Cowles
Cover Artist: Gerald Parel
Variant Cover Artist: John Tyler Christopher
Assistant Editor: Tom Groneman
Editor: Mark Paniccia
Release Date: March 20, 2019

In part two, the Rebels initiate their ambitious plan to take down the infrastructure of Shu-Torun to render it useless to the Empire. At the same time, Princess Leia will enact her revenge for the betrayal of Queen Trios. The issue marks the return of Kanchar, the Imperial Officer with the cybernetic arm who first appeared in Issue 38 of the Ashes of Jedha story arc. Leia’s plan is immediately met with a very difficult challenge which could expose the plot immediately. At the same time, we see that her team isn’t quite the definition of compatible. Particularly, the extremist nature of Benthic and his crew. The issue ends with the team in a seemingly precarious position.

If anything, Queen Trios has demonstrated she is quite astute and clever in manipulating circumstances to her advantage or more accurately, the interests of Sho-Torun. Her selfless dedication to her home planet is the driving motivation for her actions. Although this has been detrimental to the Rebel Alliance, it isn’t quite a fault since she is attempting to gain her planet’s sovereignty despite the Empire’s dominance. Perhaps, she isn’t prey to the circumstance as it appears and has a scheme of her own to escape the yoke of Darth Vader? Another question remains at the conclusion: Has Leia exposed her hand too soon by getting a gibe into the Queen? Plus, don’t forget SCAR Squadron.

Angel Unzueta marks a return to the series with this issue and is always a welcome addition. One commonality with all the artists that have contributed to the series is their exceptional attention to detail. GURU-eFX’s coloring is always reflective of the moment. The use of lighting not only displays the mood but also the location the characters find themselves in. Likewise, Gerald Parel’s cover work is astounding. You couldn’t go wrong by judging the book by its cover.

Marvel has continuously produced a powerhouse team to each issue in the self-titled series. There is not one title that I look forward to most than the next issue of Star Wars.
