Alex Lawther on Nemik: “I wish I hadn’t been killed by that trolley full of credits”

While the words of Karis Nemik‘s manifesto chimed like a bell as the final episode of Andor ends, and the message he’d formulated inspired the galaxy to fight back against repression, control and tyranny it’s interesting to realise that Alex Lawther, the actor behind the character who died so tragically after the Aldhani heist in season one of the show, was completely unaware of the power of his characters words. “I had no idea,” he says, and speaking with Polygon about his role in Alien: Earth he described how Tony Gilroy sent him a very interesting email.

“He wrote this very beautiful email about the resonance of that particular piece of writing. ‘I’m sure you’re aware of how deeply our work together has landed’ — And I was like, Oh, actually, I’m not really that aware of those things.”

“I’m glad I didn’t have time to sit with it. I’m glad that we just did it off the cuff. When writing is good, it’s better not to spend too much time thinking about it. The writing does a lot of the work.”

“Because of Tony’s cleverness, I get to sort of live on in a way, But I wish I hadn’t been killed by that trolley full of credits.”
