With the arrival in the States on 12th November of Disney Plus, the new streaming service from the House of Mouse, the landscape of television changes as a slew of Disney properties come under one roof. And, despite the new service launching with a healthy amount of programs and films, content is going to be required and so the news that Ron Howard is rumoured to be discussing a Willow sequel series for the streamer comes as no great surprise.
Ron Howard and “Solo” writer Jonathan Kasdan are in negotiations for a sequel series to Howard’s 1988 feature “Willow” at Disney+, Variety has confirmed.
The original fantasy film came from a George Lucas story and was produced by Lucasfilm, so a Disney+ series adaptation would seem like a natural fit, given how many other Lucasfilm projects are in the works for the streaming platform.
In an interview on MTV’s “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Howard said that “serious discussions” were ongoing and confirmed that Warwick Davis, who played the titular character in the original, would be returning.
“Warwick is so cool and so good and he’s such a good actor that I really hope we get the chance to see the mature Willow in action,” Howard said.
Fantastic news that Howard and writer Jon Kasdan are in discussions with Lucasfilm after the hugely satisfying Solo: A Star Wars Story and that Willow himself Warwick Davis is involved once again. Perhaps this adds meat to the bone of the rumour that Kasdan is no longer working on the 5th Indiana Jones film, but if that’s the trade-off to have him involved, I think we will take that.
