Benedict Cumberbatch on playing Thrawn: “That’s a straight no from me, right now”

While it’s worth remembering that he denied playing Khan in 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness and is very well aware of the capacity of visual effects to turn his skin blue and his eyes red without a speck of make-up ever touching his face or contacts go into his eyes, Benedict Cumberbatch beautifully tackles and deflects the question of playing Thrawn in the live action arena.

“That’s a straight no from me, right now. There’s no way I want to be turned blue. I turned the air blue, very recently. No no, seriously, I have precious time with my children and I think sitting in a makeup chair and being painted blue, and the amount of time it would take to do that and then take it off at the end of the day might just… it’s not the right time in my life for that.”

A conversation with Collider isn’t the venue to announce any involvement in a live action project, so of course Cumberbatch would say what he said here, but for now we have to take him at his word; Sherlock Holmes doesn’t look likely to be playing space Sherlock Holmes any time soon.
