There are a fortunate few who have seen footage from Star Wars: Starfighter, the 28th May 2027 film directed by Shawn Levy, writtten by Jonathan Tropper, produced by Kathleen Kennedy, with visual effects by Industrial Light and Magic and cinematography by Claudio Miranda, and outside of members of the production (including Matt Smith, who claims to have seen footage) attendees of CineEurope in Barcelona last week were treated to a screening (as yet released outside of the room) of scenes from the film which is now 334 days away.
CineEurope brings together major cinema chains, regional operators, independent theatre owners, international film distributors and cinema equipment suppliers and concessionaires from 85 territories every year, and this time they were in for a treat. No word on the reaction to the footage, but surely with D23 coming later this summer and the clock ticking to the release of the film, it won’t be long before we start to see more from this exciting new era of the saga.

Star Wars: Starfighter is a story that stands apart from the Skywalker Saga. In some ways, it will be familiar (there is at least one lightsaber), and in others, it will be different (there will be no returning Star Wars characters). Regardless, as the first entirely original movie to be released under Lucasfilm’s new leadership (despite being started by Kathleen Kennedy), and the first movie to push past The Rise of Skywalker, Star Wars: Starfighter feels poised to set the stage for the next generation of Star Wars storytelling.
