In an era when any form of pick-up or reshoot signals certain doom for a film, it’s interesting to see that forty years ago The Empire Strikes Back went back to add an extra scene to its now iconic ending. The additional ILM shots of the Rebel fleet being added after the film premiered are well known, but these final moments of Luke and Leia together being filmed a full four months later isn’t. Here, Mark Hamill responds to a message online and explains the reasoning behind the addition of this key moment.
Filmed 4 months after we wrapped principal photography on #ESB, it wasn't a "re-shoot", it was an added scene. Concerned about the downbeat ending & thorough defeat of the protagonists, they wanted to add an uplifting moment of hope & rejuvenation to reassure the audience. https://t.co/VIMbC3YprU pic.twitter.com/MG41dr8fgu
