Captain Enoch was one of the most instantly recognisable faces in the recent Ahsoka series on Disney Plus and speaking on the latest episode of Dagobah Dispatch, Expanse actor Wes Chatham discussed the role and how he was a willing soft-touch as soon as he learned the project he was auditioning for may be set in the galaxy far, far away.
“When we found out that it was an audition for Star Wars and they wanted me to go do a suit test in L.A, we asked all the questions that you ask,” says Chatham on the podcast. “It’s like, ‘What is the role? What is this? What is the time commitment?’ And they’re like, ‘Sorry, we can’t give you any of that. Do you want to come out and test or not?’ [Laughs] And I was like ‘Yeah, I’m coming out.’ And I told my team, ‘Listen, don’t count on me to be a tough negotiator because as soon as I show up and as soon as I see stormtroopers and things like that, they have me. I’m not coming home.’”
It turns out Chatham was the perfect choice to play Captain Enoch. Not only did he actually serve in the military — Chatham got in start in acting while in the U.S. Navy when the Denzel Washington film Antwone Fisher filmed on his ship and he was cast in the movie — but he also immediately recognized the inspiration for Enoch’s gold visage. “When I saw the Captain Enoch uniform for the first time, it reminded me of Excalibur,” says Chatham. “And I remember having a conversation with [showrunner] Dave Filoni and he was excited that I picked up that detail.”
