Over the years, Star Wars has given us a plethora of characters. They’ve inspired us, influenced us, made us fall in love and broke our hearts too. We’ve related to them through their experiences as we compared them to our own. In a way, we’ve grown alongside many of them and felt their pain, their loss, their victory, and even their sacrifices. Good times and bad times, we were there too. And it’s been one helluva ride so far, following their adventures through the galaxy far, far away. Especially, with Luke and Leia, the Skywalker twins.

The Skywalker twins have been the focal point of this epic adventure called Star Wars since the very beginning. Their pairing on screen has always been somewhat of a climatic point too. Think about it, Leia’s actions were Luke’s call to action. Had it not been for Leia’s impromptu last minute recording with R2-D2’s help, Luke would still be bullseyeing womp rats on Tatooine. But I digress.

So, let’s recap, shall we? After all, it’ll be a fun way to gear up for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Good, so, without further ado, Wonder Twin Powers Activate!

‘5 of Luke and Leia’s Most Powerful Moments in Star Wars

1. Strong the Force runs, in the Skywalker line

In Revenge of the Sith, Luke, and Leia are born at the same time their mother and father die. It’s a heart-wrenching moment, but still climatic nonetheless. In fact, this is a crucial moment for them. Their bond, in the Force, and with each other is strong. After nine months, presumably, they are about to be separated for nineteen years. As it happens, this is the first of many separations that the two will undergo in their lifetime. That said, think of the repercussions this has caused. Not just between the twins, but the galaxy at large. Those nineteen years mark the rise and wrath of the Empire and the beginning, of the lifelong trend between the Skywalker twins. Continual separation.

2. I’m Luke Skywalker. I’m here to rescue you!

This scene from Star Wars: A New Hope is a high point for Luke and Leia. Both were searching for something or someone at this point in their lives. Each other. Although, unknowingly, at the time.
It’s ironic, Luke was definitely on a rescue mission, but in the end, he is the one who needs rescuing. Leia is everything he isn’t. She’s confidently decisive, determined, and fearless. And she’s a sharpshooter too. Luke is instantly captivated by her presence, and Leia is charmed by Luke as well.
His naivety and vulnerability are a magnet to Leia’s compassionate heart. They compliment each other without missing a step, like the calm before the storm. In a sense, it’s safe to say they rescue each other.

3. For Luck!

Ok, a quick tidbit of trivia. This scene, for luck, was done in one take. Yup, the swing across the chasm. George Lucas only had enough in the budget to get this shot done in one take. And so, when Leia kissed Luke on the cheek for luck she meant it. Literally.

This fast-paced and suspenseful moment between the twins is one of my personal favorites. It’s just the two of them with odds stacked up against them. The stakes are high. They need to get across. It’s the only way they can reach the Millennium Falcon and get off the Death Star. If they don’t, they all die. And with that, Leia turns to Luke and plants one on his cheek. For luck she says. Then they swing.

4. We’ve got to go back!

In The Empire Strikes Back we see the Force at work between the twins. In a way, this is their real reunion. It’s an awakening. Luke calls to Leia through the use of Force telepathy and she not only hears him, but she can see him. She can visualize him hanging there. Clinging to his life amongst the clouds of Bespin. Though things are dire for all of them, she knows they have to take the risk and go back to rescue Luke.

5. The Force is strong in my family

We see Luke pass this on to his sister, Leia in Return of the Jedi. Again, it’s another epic moment between the twins. The setting itself is stage beautifully. The imagery and music are poetically haunting. It sets the mood for what’s about to come. Luke tells Leia the truth about his family and hers as well. The Force is strong is his family. He has it. His father has it. And yes, his sister has it too. Leia is his sister.

The revelation is so surreal to Leia as she says, “I know.” Somehow she’s always known. It’s as if she’s thinking back on all that has happened since she has met Luke. Since he came back into her life and her, his. All that they have accomplished together. It’s as if Leia knows that they are stronger when they are together. And yet, she knows if they stay together, they will be at the mercy of the Empire. What is the right thing to do? It’s a question they’ll have to deal with for the rest of their lives. To stay together, or to run away from each other. Far away.

Well, I hope you enjoyed the journey down memory lane. I, for one, cannot wait to see these space twins back in action in The Last Jedi. I don’t know about you, but I’m hoping and trusting in the Force for a Luke and Leia reunion. So here’s to December 14th! It can’t come soon enough. May the Force be with you!
