With a huge Netflix deal freshly inked and all of the opportunities that now allows them, perhaps it’s not surprising that David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will no longer be writing and producing a Star Wars trilogy, leaving those 2022, 2024 and 2026 dates in the calendar even more open to interpretation in the wake of the final chapter of the Skywalker Saga, The Rise of Skywalker.
It’s certainly going to be an interesting – mostly TV led – three years for sure as we head towards 2022, and here’s what the duo had to say about their departure.
“We love Star Wars. When George Lucas built it, he built us too. Getting to talk about Star Wars with him and the current Star Wars team was the thrill of a lifetime, and we will always be indebted to the saga that changed everything. But there are only so many hours in the day, and we felt we could not do justice to both Star Wars and our Netflix projects. So we are regretfully stepping away.”
And honorary Fantha Tracker Kathleen Kennedy also released a statement.
David Benioff and Dan Weiss are incredible storytellers. We hope to include them in the journey forward when they are able to step away from their busy schedule to focus on Star Wars.”
The future of Star Wars seems to get less and less clear especially after this latest development. 2022 was supposed to be the next Star Wars theatrical release following The Rise of Skywalker, however, it may be longer till we get another film in theaters post Skywalker Saga. It’ll certainly be interesting to see how this turn of events shapes the path for the franchise. Until then, there will be much Star Wars content to be enjoyed on Disney Plus between next month’s release of The Mandalorian and the upcoming Cassian Andor and Obi-Wan series’.
