Star Wars #21 (2020)

TRAPPED ON A STAR DESTROYER
While our heroes desperatetly search for
ways to topple the Empire, one of the
Rebellion’s bravest members has
infiltrated the ”Tarkin’s Will”….

Writer: Charles Soule
Artist: Ramon Rosanas, Marco Castiello
Letterer: Clayton Cowles
Colorist: Rachelle Rosenberg
Cover artist: Ramon Rosanas
Editor: Mark Paniccia
Publication date: March 2, 2022

I’m going to get this out there right away, this issue is not a continuation of  Star Wars #20. This is not about Luke and his Jedi quest. This is just as good. We are finally going to get Shara out of that scarred menace, the Tarkin’s Will!

Pardon me for maybe being a touch hyperbolic but I personally feel that this issue will go down as a classic. You know when a TV show has a bottle episode that truly works? This feels like that. It’s a short story that works entirely by itself and advances the larger narrative forward. It’s a perfect comic book. A kid could pick this up off the shelf, having never read a Star Wars comic before, and have a whale of a time.

Series fans may find the diversion from the Crimson Reign crossover to be a little frustrating but guys, Shara has been gone for nearly a year, we need to check in with her for Kes’ sake!

It has to be said that while I have enjoyed the big crossover events, I found the first three arcs of Soule’s Star Wars run to be much better, and this feels like we are getting back to that. I hope we don’t have to wait much longer to continue with this storyline.

The echoes of Rey climbing through ruined Star Destroyers was a nice touch as was Soule doubling down on Zahra’s role as a disciple of Tarkin.

Don’t you just love that cover too?
