With the opening of Galactic Starcruiser at the start of March 2022, so opens the story of the vessel at the heart of the experience. and while opinions on the hotel are many and varied, here the focus is on weaving this luxury starship into the broader fabric of the Star Wars story. 6th August will bring us Star Wars: The Princess and the Scoundrel as Han and Leia celebrate their marriage aboard the Halcyon, and here in issue one of the five part mini series we certainly see plenty of history as we open in the now – now being the era of the First Order / Resistance War – and a grandfather and his granddaughter heading towards the Halcyon in a shuttle.

It transpires that the grandfather Shorr Komrrin has visited before, many moons ago as a youngster himself during the Clone Wars and we see Anakin Skywalker and Asajj Ventress go at it hammer and tong while Padme watches over young Shorr, and we return to ‘now’ as the Halcyons blue-skinned Pantoran Captain Keevan is warned of an incoming pirate vessel. That pirate is a very welcome old face – Crimson Jack, the first villain our Rebel heroes faced way back in 1977 after the adaptation of the first movie and issue 7 of the original run. Jack has picked up a transmission from a Resistance member onboard the Halcyon, information of value that he could sell to the First Order.

The ships logistics droid DeeThree-Ohnine calms Shorr’s young granddaughter, telling her how the Halcyon has seen of far worse foes in its 275 year history and we jump back in time again, though much farther than before. 265 years to be precise, to the time of the High Republic where we meet Burryaga and Nib Assek as they head to the bridge to find that the Nihil are dropping out of the stars, their ‘paths’ making them impossible to track. The Halcyon quickly jumps as the Tempest realise such a luxurious ship has wealthy passengers, and with that information.

Burryaga reaches out through the Force to Starlight Beacon as their thrusters are disabled and asks for assistance as the Nihil board. Bury takes the Jedi Vector to get help, while Nib Assek fights the Nihil. Bury is swinging the Nihil ships behind him, while Nib finds the crew of the Halcyon step up to assist her. Just in time, Stellan Gios and more Jedi arrive, mopping up the remaining Nihil as the Tempest Runner secures the information he requires and blasts a hole in the hull, making his escape. That adventure led to the building of the Lightsaber Training Pod, and the finale as Crimson Jack shows the Halcyon he’s not messing about, firing on the ship as the issue ends.

It’s got to be difficult, crafting a story that feels like a classic Star Wars adventure while not making it read like a blatant advert for a theme park – literally – and as it goes Ethan Sacks does a decent job. There are clear beats to hit, areas of Galactic Starcruiser that require some history and depth, and the capacity to hop back and forth through 275 years of history gives them plenty of scope. The next four issues will be fascinating to follow as the Halcyon serves as backdrop to major galactic moments.
