As promised, the Star Wars: Rogue One – Cassian Andor Marvel one-off picks up almost immediately after the live-action finale of Andor on Disney Plus, but the show-to-comic transition does require a leap of faith from the audience, likely caused by the need for immediacy to wrap up the title character’s arc in the streaming series.
Taking a step back to the show’s Episode 12 of Season 2, titled “Jedha, Kyber, Erso,” Bail Organa’s visit to Andor’s quarters sets things in motion. He informs the intelligence officer that he is now cleared to meet Saw Gerrera’s informant and that General Draven will have his orders. After previously being told no, Cassian asks what changed, and Organa replied, “If I die fighting the Empire, I want to go down swinging.”
Comparing the comic to the show episode, Cassian must have met with General Draven and Mon Mothma in Central Command right after the discussion with Organa, but before he waters his plants and begins the show’s deliciously tense walk of Andor from his living quarters to his LMTR-20 U-Wing ship with a waiting K-2SO.
The walk, portrayed expertly in the show by Diego Luna, mixes in Melshi leading rebel soldiers on a training run, Mon Mothma and Vel Sartha talking at a dining table (the main element that disrupts a smooth timeline from the show to the comic), a glimpse of Saw Gerrera on Jedha, and Director Krennic watching construction of the Death Star.
Next stop, The Ring of Kafrene with a relieved K-2SO exclaiming (on the show), “It’s so much easier when I have a flight plan,” after the comic, post Draven and Mothma telling Andor he will meet with a man named Tivik, based on big news involving the Empire’s interest in kyber crystals. Now the quick review/tease of the comic, written by Benjamin Percy, that you should go get a copy of for all the details and amazing art of Luke Ross.
They take off from Yavin 4 but are unaware they are being tracked as soon as they enter the flight area approaching The Ring of Kafrene. Director Krennic has hired a bounty hunter named Barger to find Bodhi Rook, the Empire’s missing cargo pilot. This bounty hunter also deals in “false credentials” and recognizes his work being used by Andor—bringing unwanted attention to the rebel spy upon their approach.
On the ground, stormtroopers are everywhere. Andor has to work through a maze of danger just to set up a meeting point with Tivik, who has built contingencies into his plan for his personal safety—likely learned from Gerrera. Cassian creates a distraction to free some space of the Stormtrooper contingent, and connects with Tivik via a hidden comm. It is really powerful seeing Tivik, right arm in a sling, wearing the only clothes audiences will ever see him in before his untimely demise in the film.
We expect to see Andor and Tivik connect—what we didn’t know is that our hero faces off with the bounty hunter before he arrives at the rendezvous point. There are multiple pages of Barger and Andor fighting until K-2SO shows up to the rescue, after ignoring orders to stay on the ship.
After a brief exchange, the reprogrammed security droid returns to the ship, and Cassian makes his way to Tivik—meaning we’ll pick up this story in the initial moments of Rogue One.
This is a quick-hit, one-off comic, but it adds additional tension between the Andor streaming series and the Rogue One film, as we start to celebrate the film’s 10th anniversary. Cassian’s impatience is amplified due to his near-death experience, adding even more direness to the situation. And next month, Marvel and Lucasfilm serve up the Jyn Erso one-off, as this special offering continues.
