We’re well and truly back in the prequel era in this first of the four issue Jango Fett mini series as Ethan Sacks – fresh off the 42 issue thrill-ride Bounty Hunters – leads us into familiar yet fresh territory as we both celebrate the anniversary of the prequels and dive right in with Boba’s Dad Jango. No need for preamble here – in this time period he is the Mandalorian – and as we join him roughousing his way into a gambling den on Oosalon to find his quarry Fissark Tosan, we watch as he dispatches half the bar to get Tosan and drops a thermal detonator as they rocket pack up and out of the skylight.
While long-time Star Wars fans know only too well the legend of Boba Fett, the prequels gave us Jango and instantly there was litttle question why it was his DNA that was chosen to form the basis of the Clone army. Confident, professional, calm and proficient, it took the second greatest warrior of the Jedi Council and a malfunctioning rocket pack to end his story, but here we’re seeing him at his best during the early days of the Trade Federation / Naboo dispute.
We cut to the regional Republic headquarters on Jaloria where a ceremony hoping to reunite the two species of Glee Anselm – the Nautolans and the Anselmi – is taking place. Key to the ceremony is a highly valuable piece of art known as the Hope of Glee Anselm, and despite both side grumbling about the piece utilising valuable pieces of their cultures to forge it, we watch as a heist takes place and Republic guards taken down as the Hope is stolen. It’s all over the HoloNet and yet another embarrassment for Supreme Chancellor Valorum as we see Jango deliver his bounty on Halmad and get offered another job, this time by the Republic, who are unable to use the Jedi, and find the Hope of Glee Anselm. However, Jango isn’t the only hunter engaged to find it, and we cut to Daiyu (last seen in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series on Disney Plus) where feuding bounty hunters flex their muscels and a fight breaks out, only for a hunter callled Vigor Struk to come out on top.
Hopping across the galaxy to Megalox Penitentiary we see a throng of nervous prison guards and the reason for their skittishness – Aurra Sing, held captive but told that if she helps regain the Hope that her sentence will be commuted. We return to Jango as his ship is surrounded and we see the pack that attacked and stole the Hope by Slave 1 and watch as Fett takes them out in quick order, and end the issue as the Firespray takes to the skies.
There are few things more fun in Star Wars comics than reading a fast-paced, galaxy-hopping Ethan Sacks tale and this is no exception. Tying in neatly with The Living Force and waving the flag for the prequel era, this is teeing up the rest of the mini series nicely, and with such lush art by Luke Ross we’re sure to get plenty of memorable moments. Just watching Jango take down the opposition with such flair makes you realise that while Boba is very much his fathers son, he didn’t teach him everything, so the remaining issues are sure to be ones to watch. If this isn’t on your pull list, then your pull list is incomplete.
