With a fandom very much split into two camps regarding the mid-trilogy entry and handover from The Last Jedi to The Rise of Skywalker, Rian Johnson – speaking to Rolling Stone while promoting the second season of Poker Face – briefly swung the conversation over to the GFFA and the question of whether or not he harboured any ill will towards his directorial predecessor and successor J.J Abrams and the choices he made when picking up the reins for Episode IX.
“I didn’t feel resentful in some way. In my perspective, J.J. did the same thing with the third that I did with the second, which is not digging it up and undoing — just telling the story the way that was most compelling going forward. That means not just validating what came before, but recontextualizing it and evolving and changing as the story moves forward.”
