Star Wars: Jedi Knights #6

SINSARA

Jedi Master Fondar Etzis had died on the agricultural planet of Mina-Rau.

An honor guard compromised of Jedi Knights Mace Windu, Qui-Gon Jinn, and Aayla Secura has been dispatched to recover his remains and return them for cremation on Coruscant.

But a dark secret looms over the circumstances of Etzis’ death, and the three Jedi may well be walking into a trap….

In a very pleasing opening page, we see we’re on the agricultural world of Mina-Rau, where the opening chapter of Andor season 2 took place, and in the endless fields it’s harvest time as our Jedi heroes (Aayla Secura, Qui-Gon Jinn and Mace Windu) arrive onplanet to investigate the death of a much-respected Jedi, Master Etzis. Sent to Mina-Rau to drive off crop thieves, Magistrate Khediva doesn’t believe the thieves were involved in his death, and we turn the page to see the lifeless body of the fallen Jedi lying at rest. Aayla says a few words, but Qui-Gon is uneasy, sensing a darkness surrounding the Jedi corpse. Neither Mace nor Secura sense anything, but Jinn is convinced; the elderly Jedi was murdered.

EWe cut to the fields of Mina-Rau as the trio search his ship, and see Qui-Gon test a sample of Etzis’ blood; he was killed by an unknown but quick acting poison, a method not used by the crop stealing Quillian Bandits. It’s determined that the ship has recieved no visitors while on Mina-Rau, and as Magistrate Khediva explains the straight-forward nature of the populace and their respect for Etzis, we see Mace and Sing outside. She posits a question; what if this was a simple accident, with no assassin at all, but their thoughts are broken by Jinn who senses danger, and we quickly see Aurra and Mace fall, hit by darts propelled by an unseen assailant.

Our next dramatic page is a full shot of the masked assassin leaping high to attack Qui-Gon, and we watch as a furious battle begins, the two equally matched as they hack and slash at each other. Through the magic of comic lettering we ‘hear’ the approach of a storeys-high combine and watch as they both leap high to avoid the spinning blades, continuing their skirmish on the canopy. Jinn tells the assailant he knows he killed Etzis to draw him out, but why? He continues, asking what his quarrel is with Qui-Gon, and reveals to the attacker that he knows his name; Corlis Rath. Even this solicits no reply from Rath, until in his anger Jinn knocks him back, and he lowers his mask to say one single word – Sinsara.

Jinn is visibly shocked, so much so that he is unprepared for the next attack, one that sees him run through by both of Rath’s blades and left bleeding on the top of the combine. Rathn looks down at the stricken Jedi but does no more, leaping off the combine as Qui-Gon says the name Sinsara once again as the issue ends.

Sometimes a kinetic, action-packed but script light issue works and sometimes it doesn’t. This emphatically works, ratcheting up the drama as the series heads into the home straight. Indeed, this is one of those limited series that could easily be switched into an ongoing title. Here we see Qui-Gon is regularly the one who senses the danger, while the senior Mace Windu does not, and that all feeds into the genius of the Sith plan; not only play the long game to smash the jedi, crumble the Republic from within and take the galaxy, but also to take off the board the one Jedi who seemed the most likely to rumble their plans. We’ve known for over a quarter of a century that the death of Qui-Gon set into motion a chain of events that saw countless trillions suffer; here in Jedi Knights we’re gifted with a beautifully rendered, masterfully scripted and tightly crafted front row seat. Top drawer work.
