In the world of movies, it’s sometimes easy to come to the conclusion that no-one ever really dies. After all, a part of them lives on in digital form every time somebody decides to upload a TV show or film they once had a role in, looks up old interviews, or browse clips.
Star Wars already went there
Through digital technology advances, new performances are very much a part of this ode to the dead. We only have to look to the surprise appearance of Peter Cushing in the 2016 Star Wars prequel Rogue One as evidence of that. The veteran actor was digitally recreated years after his passing, using state-of-the-art effects, motion capture, and archive footage. The motion capture was brought to life by Holby City star Guy Henry, who, apparently, is also a pretty good impressionist. When you think of the recent films that have turned back the clock for iconic actors, such as Carrie Fisher (also in Rogue One) and Michael Douglas (Ant Man), it’s easy to see even further opportunities opening up for beloved stars and their most iconic characters to come back from the dead.
So how about a young Luke?
As Star Wars has made it clear that it’s a direction it has no problem going in, it isn’t out of the realm of possibility that we could yet see a young Luke Skywalker be digitally recreated in flashback scenes. Hamill has recently said that he would have no issue should Lucasfilm explore a future for the character beyond the actor’s involvement, even if that should mean a younger actor being cast in the role. After all, Harrison Ford is about to watch another actor play a younger version of Han Solo.
Anyone else?
The Star Wars universe is full of characters and actors that fans would love to see make their big screen return. While Solo may keep fans of the space gunslinger happy for now, it surely won’t be long before they’re longing to see Harrison Ford back in the Millennium Falcon. How about his old buddy Lando Calrissian? Of course, let’s not forget the legendary Alex Guinness as Obi-Wan Kenobi. It’s only a matter of time before other sci-fi franchises such as Battlestar Galactica and Star Trek follow suit. After all, fans clearly can’t get enough nostalgia when it comes to these franchises, including, numerous spin-offs, box sets, and video games such as Star Wars Battlefront, Star Trek: The Video Game, and the official Battlestar Galactica online slot.
