It might seem low down on the totem pole of important happenings in the Star Wars galaxy right now, but gaining the approval from George Lucas to screen the original, unaltered, CGI untouched version of A New Hope – during the Galactic Innovations event last week – is huge, something many thought would never happen.

Movie fan and animation enthusiast David Daut was at the screening and looked at the importance of this decision by Lucas.

In terms of the canonical Star Wars galaxy, the release of the original version – of which there were many, including airplane versions, different sound mixes and other tweaks – is of huge importance to Star Wars historians and fans who saw and fell in love with that version forty years ago. Whether or not this brings the release of the original, unaltered trilogy closer isn’t clear but what is clear is that special screenings of the originals are no longer off the table.

Now for the release of that 4K version of A New Hope we keep hearing about.
